The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics leads the Virginia Military Institute Athletic Department. This position provides oversight for all aspects of the 18 NCAA Division I varsity athletic programs (11 male, 7 female), including matters pertaining to academic and athletic success, budgets, compliance, fundraising, marketing, operations, personnel, sports facilities and student-athlete welfare and development. The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics guides the overall direction of the athletic department and leads a team of highly qualified professionals to shape VMI’s student-athletes into productive leaders and to focus the athletic experience on academic achievement, competitive athletic performance, and being an integrated member of the Corps of Cadets.

The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics reports to the Superintendent (President) and represents the institute in all conference matters (VMI is a member of the Southern Conference).

Duties and Responsibilities

Build an excellent work environment throughout all levels of the Athletic Department Develop, execute, and oversee the strategic plan for the Athletic Department Identify, hire, support, mentor, and evaluate ethical and talented coaches in all NCAA sports Create an efficient and productive operation for all athletic administrative staff Work in coordination with the Superintendent, the President of the VMI Alumni Agencies, and other individuals to oversee a fundraising plan for Athletics Manage Athletic facilities by coordinating with the designated facility managers Identify priorities for Athletic facilities construction and capital improvement projects Responsible for the Athletic Department budget and monitoring use of funds Foster an environment of compliance with Federal, State, NCAA, Southern Conference, and VMI policies Build successful relationships with the Board of Visitors, the Alumni Board, the VMI Keydet Club, alumni donors, and faculty Oversee athletic department marketing, promotions, and public relations Collaborate and coordinate as a member of VMI’s executive team Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
