This position requires the ability to assist the Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Health and Performance in the development and management of a comprehensive sports medicine program at the Division 1 level. Duties will include supervision and management of other staff members providing sports medicine care. Persons must have the ability to make independent decisions in the following areas; injury assessment, injury referrals, injury care management, return to play, emergency care, communication, department advancement, staff management, and administration under the supervision of the Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Health and Performance and team physicians. This position requires the ability to work with sports medicine staff, strength & conditioning staff, sport coaches, athletic administration, Harvard University Health Services staff, and team physicians. Persons must possess the skills necessary to multi-task, communicate effectively with student-athletes and other parties mentioned above, complete tasks on time, and plan effective strategies to manage the sports medicine department, multiple teams, and student-athletes. This position is a 12-month position. This position requires program management, supervisory responsibilities over full-time athletic trainer positions, and health care management of assigned intercollegiate sports.
MEDICAL CARE AND SUPPORT TO INTER-COLLEGIATE VARSITY ATHLETES: • Coordinates medical care of intercollegiate student-athletes consistent with the Harvard University Athletic Training Guidelines. Care includes the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and/or illnesses. • Create a vision and implement programming within the operational philosophy developed by the Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Health and Performance to consistently advance sports medicine services • Ability to make independent and appropriate decisions in areas of therapeutic exercise, therapeutic modalities, manual therapy treatments and return to play. • Supports assigned varsity teams; handle walk-in care; supports special events as assigned. • Implements measures to prevent injuries and prepare athletes for practice and competition, including taping, bracing, therapeutic exercise, movement screens, and wearable technology. • Refers student-athletes to team physicians as appropriate and to implement physicians’ instructions regarding management of athletic injuries. • Communicates professionally and effectively across a large, diverse population including, but not limited to, all student-athletes, athletic training staff, athletic training students, physicians, dietitians, mental health clinicians, coaches, and other sports medicine umbrella practitioners. • Must be able to make appropriate decisions regarding the sports medicine emergency action plans and carry out plans for each athletic venue.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: • Direct supervision of approximately 50% (7) full-time staff athletic trainers • Interview, hire staff, onboard and mentor new hires, assign and review work, conduct performance reviews and provide corrective actions if warranted up to and including termination • Council and advise athletic training staff on matters related to patient care and operational procedures • Handle questions and concerns from coaches related to their assigned managing athletic trainer • Research and conceive new technology and medical advancements to further enhance sports medicine department operations • Meet with Athletics Administration, HUHS/Administration, and/or Coaches on special projects as well as provide student-athlete health and education • Provide organization and communication of role delineation and responsibility for other staff members who are assisting with the sports medicine care of their assigned sports • Organize and communicate athletic training staff morning schedule for academic year. • Organize and schedule event coverage which includes the credentialing, hiring, and management of athletic training per diem hires • Oversee and manage sports medicine sub-committees • Oversee and manage daily operational procedures of athletic training facility • Organize and communicate plans for pre-season physical exams to all parties which include but are not limited to: compliance department, team physicians, HUHS, athletic training staff, research teams (includes organization of research project data collection during this time frame). • Supports the education of “transition to practice” certified athletic trainers through hiring, supervision, education, and mentorship of this program. • Manage and complete special projects as assigned by Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Health and Performance. • Prepares and maintains medical records, including but not limited to the documentation of injury reports, medical treatments, rehabilitation programs, medical referrals, and other medical records. • Preceptor for undergraduate and graduate athletic training students. • Maintains NATABOC certification; Massachusetts State licensure; and CPR/First Aid certification.
COMPLIANCE: • Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of Harvard University, Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) and athletic department. • Employs the standards, practices, and procedures of the Ivy League, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and National Athletic Trainer’s Association. • Completes and complies with all HUHS and FAS training requirements. • Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Officer.
Required – Master’s Degree. National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification) is required. Candidates must be eligible for athletic training licensure in the state of Massachusetts. Candidates must maintain certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid. Candidates must continue to meet NATABOC and state licensure requirements during their employment. Candidates must meet standards as required by Harvard University Health Services credentialing process. Candidates must have 3-5 years of full-time athletic trainer experience. Candidates must have the ability to work nights, weekends, and holiday work which is required. Travel is also required. A valid driver's license and ability to drive a vehicle are required. All candidates should be able to lift and move medical equipment and supplies weighing up to 75-100 pounds. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills, ability to supervise and manage staff, ability to make budgetary decisions, ability to possess a vision to progress a sports medicine department, ability to organize, plan and communicate such a vision, work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and other university constituents. Candidates must possess the ability to make independent decisions under the supervision of our physicians and Senior Athletic and Harvard University Health Services administration.
Preferred - Candidates with experience in professional and/or intercollegiate athletics, therapeutic exercise and manual therapy-based skills, staff supervision and/or management experience, additional medical certifications, and/or licenses.
