Summary: Utah Athletics, a Division I and Pac-12 Conference Institution, is seeking an Applied Performance Scientist. This position exists within the Applied Health & Performance Science Department (formerly known as Sports Science Department) and will report to the Assistant Athletic Director for Applied Health & Performance Science (TBD). The purpose of this position is to provide support to varsity sports by assisting in the development of student athlete performance and well-being.
Responsibilities: Support football and other assigned sport teams in the daily management of performance technologies, data collection, data analysis and applied research. Collaborate with the athletic department’s support staff varsity teams including Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning, Sports Psychology and Sports Nutrition in formulating actionable solutions to relevant performance problems. Regularly communicate and present solutions to coaching staff. Assist in the education of student-athletes regarding recovery strategies, performance optimization, and overall wellness. Assist in the coordination of research efforts in collaboration with university’s academic departments and industry partners to help develop best-practice, vet emerging technologies, and provide innovative approaches to student-athlete health and performance. Assist in managing and supervising the department’s internship program.
Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, Bio-mechanics or related field • Two(2) years of practical experience in a high-performance sport environment (e.g. NCAA Division 1, Olympic, professional sports organization)
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong understanding of the application of various performance technologies (GPS, force plates, heart rate, etc.) • Data analysis and visualization skills (Excel, Power BI, etc.) • Database creation and management skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Experience reporting performance data back to sport coaches and providing actionable insights • Ability to function as a member of a team
Preferences: • Master’s Degree in Kinesiology, Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, or related field • Relevant accreditation (NSCA, CSCCa, UKSCA, ASCA, etc.) • Background in applied or academic research • Advanced data analysis and visualization skills (R, Python, etc.)
