James Madison University (JMU), a Division I Member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association, is seeking either a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to work under the supervision of the Team Physician within the JMU Sports Medicine Department. This position will report to the JMU Team Physician/Medical Director. The position is a full-time, 12-month position with a full comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1 2021. The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will work under the supervision of the JMU Team Physician/Medical Director and will provide primary care and sports medicine services that help insure the health, safety, and wellbeing of the student-athletes at JMU. The selected candidate will be expected to maintain a high level of communication, clinical proficiency, outstanding interpersonal skills, and professionalism as a member of the JMU Sports Medicine Staff. The ability to work and function as a member of the health care team is essential.
The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner responsibilities include:
Assessment and management of the student-athlete’s medical condition/complaint.
Assist JMU Team Physician and provide evidence-based medical services to 450+ JMU student-athletes competing in 18 NCAA Division I sports.
Perform a variety of primary care sports medicine clinical duties while autonomously evaluating and providing care to JMU student-athletes.
Management of medical conditions, illnesses, and injuries to include but not limited to general primary care, non-operative sports medicine, mental health/ADHD, concussion management, female athlete triad/REDS, minor procedures, casting, and substance abuse education. Services provided daily within the on campus JMU Sports Medicine Physicians’ Clinic.
Independently assess, diagnose, and document findings and make clinical decisions regarding the patient’s management based on the supervising physician’s protocols.
Write medical orders for labs and diagnostic studies and prescriptions.
Interprets results and determines preliminary diagnosis and treatment plan in accordance with physician protocols.
Attend and respond to emergencies when needed.
Comply strictly with medical care regulations and safety standards.
Participate in select medical coverage for athletics competitions.
Accurate and Timely Documentation within student-athlete’s medical chart
Communication, Collaboration, and Education as a member of the JMU Sports Medicine Dept.
Serve as an interdisciplinary member of the health care team of providers to include: Team Physicians, athletic trainers, sports dietitians, orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, sport and clinical psychologists, and other allied health care professionals.
Communicate accordingly with supervising physician and Sports Medicine staff in a timely manner.
Educate and counsel JMU student-athletes regarding medical conditions that could affect their safety, performance, and wellbeing.
Maintain licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner as defined by the VA Board of Medicine or Board of Nursing.
Obtain continuing medical education units as defined by Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner certification.
Pre-participation Physical Examinations
Assist Team Physician and Sports Medicine staff with the administration and documentation of pre-participation physical examinations. Assist Team Physician in establishing medical clearance for all JMU student-athletes.

Minimum qualifications include:
Certification through NCCPA as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) through passing the PANCE exam or Certified and licensed as a Nurse Practitioner through ANCC/AANP.
A license to practice as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in Virginia will be required prior to beginning work; an unrestricted license through the DEA to prescribe controlled substances; possess a fundamental knowledge of primary care for conditions, illnesses, and injuries affecting the NCAA Division I student-athlete population; certified in CPR/AED (BLS) ; possess the ability to effectively communicate with multiple parties within the athletics department and campus community.
Preferred qualifications include:
Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies obtained from an accredited ARC-PA institution or Masters in Nursing (MSN).
Two years of experience as a practicing Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; previous clinical experience in family medicine, internal medicine, non-operative sports medicine, or urgent care; certified in advanced cardiac life support (ALS)
Training and proficiency with musculoskeletal ultrasound; involvement in teaching and research related to sports medicine
Highly motivated with proven ability in patient care in primary care settings.
The successful candidate will ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, CAA, NCAA, and Commonwealth of Virginia regulations.
