The Southland Conference, located in suburban north Dallas, is seeking applications for the position of Communications Assistant, a 10-month internship. The selected candidate, under the direction of the Associate Commissioner for Communications and Director of Communications, shall assist in the overall management of the Conference’s communications operation, focused primarily on the compilation and dissemination of statistical and other pertinent information. This includes, but is not limited to: Assisting in the development of a visionary, creative and effective communications strategy across multiple platforms; Having productive working relationships with national, regional and local media members that enhances coverage of the Conference; Actively telling the Conference’s story, identifying and creating opportunities to obtain media coverage for the Conference and its membership; Compiling and distributing Conference statistics and maintaining historical records for the league’s 19 sports; Being knowledgeable in traditional and non-traditional media relations and statistical services, as well as publicity and promotional methods that enhance the reputation of the Conference and its member institutions; Expertly writing, editing and managing Conference content, including for the official web site, www.southland.org, as well as for news releases, media guides and other printed material, electronic communications, television and radio copy, and social media sites; Managing and disseminating players of the week selections, all-Conference teams, postseason honors, and other Conference awards initiatives; Assisting with other events such as sport media days and post-event media conferences; Traveling to and staffing select Conference championship events and other special events when necessary; Working collaboratively with and providing appropriate direction and assistance to institutional athletics personnel for the collective good of the Conference’s publicity efforts; and, performing other duties as assigned by the Commissioner and Associate Commissioner for Communications.
Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of two years of student work experience in sports information/communications at an NCAA institution is preferred. Knowledge of the communications industry, current and emerging technologies related to sports communications/media services and excellent written and oral communication skills is required. Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Office, InDesign and Photoshop, and have experience working with the Sidearm website platform, Genius/NCAA LiveStats, StatCrew, and social media platforms. The position, beginning no later than Aug. 1, 2021 and concluding May 31, 2021, provides a monthly stipend of $1,800, plus participation in the Conference’s medical, dental and vision insurance plans.
