Purpose of Position:
Intern Athletic Trainer / Strength and Conditioning Specialist - Under the supervision of the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance assist in providing sports medicine and athletic training services to the College's intercollegiate athletic teams and/or club sports (as needed) in collaboration with the designated Team Physician(s) and other qualified medical personnel. Furthermore under the supervision of the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach assist in developing and conducting safe and appropriate sports-specific strength, conditioning and performance programing for the College's intercollegiate student-athletes and teams.
Specific Tasks/Duties Intern Athletic Trainer / Strength and Conditioning Specialist:
On as needed basis, coordinate with the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance to staff the Athletic Training Facilities and to provide athletic training services, including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary. On as needed basis, provide athletic training services for the College's division of Athletics, included but not limited to: prevention, recognition, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries. Assist with oversight of the Academic and Wellness Center (AWC) Fitness Center in collaboration with Athletics Operations Coordinator. Develop and track strength and conditioning programs and activities of intercollegiate varsity athletics in collaboration with the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Sports Medicine staff and sport coaches. Provide suggested strength and conditioning information to Daemen College community, including information on proper use of athletic conditioning equipment. Direct sport coaches and student-athletes on flexibility, strengthening and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and optimize performance. May require frequent evening and weekend hours; may also necessitate early morning hours. Some team travel may be required in providing athletic training services at select away intercollegiate contests. Assist in staffing and the day-to-day operations of the athletic training facilities and AWC Fitness Center. Follow established emergency action plans for the College's athletic facilities including off-campus venues. Follow and assist with enforcement of all policies/procedures as outlined within the Sports Medicine policy/procedure manual, including codes of conduct and rules of use for the athletic training facility and equipment. Consult with Team Physician(s) for guidance on the treatment of injured student-athletes, and report on their progress. Assist in maintaining accurate medical records on all injuries, treatment, rehabilitation and physician referrals Assist with the responsibility of maintaining the athletic training room file system. Serve as a liaison for student-athletes between physicians, coaches, athletes, parents and other health care providers as needed. Apply a team approach with the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance and sport coaches to ensure that student-athletes participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. Comply with any and all policies regarding health care delivery as indicated by the College's regulations; including the completion of College "excess insurance" claims promptly (as needed). Assist with the collection, maintenance and privacy of all (new and returning) student-athletes' current contact, emergency contact, health insurance, consent and health-status documents. Assist and comply with the organization and administration of an Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens in compliance with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Assist with pre-participation exams, as needed, for prospective student-athletes. Provide for the prevention of athletic injuries through the application of protective tapings, wraps, braces, and equipment, and assist in the design of practices to help reduce the incidence of injury. Provide immediate care of athletic injuries and refer student-athletes to emergency medical facilities when necessary. Design and supervise rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries under the direction of a referring physician. Assist in budgeting, ordering and inventory of sports medicine supplies. Educate, counsel and advise athletes on health-related issues, including nutrition and substance abuse. Assist with the development and maintenance of a handbook/policy manual for athletic training students. Operates the program under the rules and regulations of the College, the NCAA, and the ECC; understanding that an employee can be suspended for a period of time without pay or terminated if found to be involved in significant or repetitive violations of NCAA regulations; Perform other duties as requested by the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance and/or Athletics Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Bachelors degree in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health or Human Performance or related field Masters degree and previous collegiate Athletic Training experience preferred Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills. Be able to apply a 'team' approach to the delivery of student-athletic health care. Must be able to work long periods under conditions requiring moderate physical demands. Tolerate long periods of standing, frequent bending, stooping, walking and lifting. Requires exposure of outdoor elements and the ability to tolerate extreme weather conditions. Ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and travel with teams when necessary. Valid driver's license required. License must meet insurance company rules and regulation for driving underwriting criteria. Required Professional Certifications
Possess and maintain Athletic Training certification through the Board of Certification (BOC) and the New York State Department of Education (NYSED). Adhere to the established BOC Standards of Professional Practice for Athletic Trainers1. Comply with the Athletic Training Laws, Rules & Regulations of the New York State Department of Education2. Possess and maintain or be eligible for a national strength and conditioning, performance specialty, or group fitness certification. Examples include but not limited to: NSCA-CSCS; NASM-PES; CSCCa-SCCC or MSCC; ACSM-GEI or EP-C Personal training certifications may be considered on a case-by-case basis. If personal training is the sole credential in this realm and the candidate becomes employed, they would be required earn at least one of the above certifications within a specified time frame. Current certification in Basic Life Support level CPR/AED.

Terms of Employment:
Position is full time, 9-month administrative, professional exempt and requires evening and weekend hours and travel, not benefit eligible. The successful candidate must be able to begin the position ideally around August 2021.
Various trainings assigned upon hire and annually thereafter by the Office of Employee Engagement.
