The director of the Department of Athletics is a full-time, benefitted, 12-month pay plan, exempt position. Working independently under the general direction of the president of the University and in collaboration with the University’s faculty, staff, administration, and local community, the director of Athletics is responsible for the administration of the athletic program by providing leadership, organization and management of a 13-sport, NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics program that provides a quality educational experience and supports success for student-athletes in the classroom and on the field, track and court. ENMU competes in the expanded Lone Star Conference that stands as the largest athletic conference in NCAA Division II with 19 affiliated institutions. The Greyhounds compete in 13 intercollegiate sports in NCAA DII level and in the NIRA with the men’s and women’s rodeo teams. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Greyhounds saw unprecedented success in the last few years on and off the field. As a department, the Hounds earned two qualifications into the NCAA National Tournament over a three-season span and set program records for wins in a season in women’s soccer. The track and field program advanced to the national meet for three straight seasons and Eastern New Mexico football has finished with a record of .500 or better in conference play in Division II football’s toughest conference. The Greyhounds have also been presented the Lone Star Conference Academic Excellence Award on both the men’s and women’s side over the course of the last three years and had five different teams crowned the academic sport champions for their respective sports last season.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the President, the Director of Athletics will administer the athletic programs at Eastern New Mexico University.
Determine and direct the policies of the Department of Athletics.
Coordinate and supervise the University's athletic program
Direct the Department of Athletics program to increase the academic success of student-athletes
Ensure that the athletic compliance program is functioning properly.
Hire, supervise and evaluate athletic personnel, including head coaches
Assist coaches in scheduling, and approval of schedules
Coordinate with coaches the team and department travel
Arrange and supervise game and contest administration
Prepare and approve contracts for games, matches, contests, and special events
Assure athletic programs are in compliance with University, NCAA, and Title IX rules and regulations
Develop and administer all athletic program budgets
Plan and recommend capital improvements and projects
Provide leadership for coordinating Greyhound Club promotion and fund-raising activities and provide public relations with on- and off-campus entities
Direct fundraising programs for scholarships and facility development
Represent the Department of Athletics at the conference and national level
Attend LSC and NCAA district, regional, and national meetings and conventions
Participate on campus, local, state, conference and national committees that concern athletics
Oversee game management
Responsibility and authority to oversee ENMU’s national inter-collegiate rodeo program
Perform other duties as assigned
Must have a master’s degree in an appropriate field with a minimum of five years of experience in college athletic administration. Five years’ experience as an associate AD or athletics director at an NCAA Division I or DII institution, or as an athletics director at a NAIA, Division II, or III institution highly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proven supervisory experience in the administration of athletic programs and personnel, budget preparation, facilities management, and a comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules
Proven record of promoting support and obtaining resources for athletics
Commitment to academic excellence for student-athletes and sensitivity to gender equity, diversity and inclusion required
Physical Demand and Working Conditions:
Occasional travel to meetings and conference events is required.
Work at times requires exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
