James Madison University, a Division 1 member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association, is accepting applications for the Director of Atlantic Union Bank Center (AUBC). The AUBC opened in November of 2020 and is one of the largest public assembly spaces in western Virginia serving the JMU Campus, community, and region. The venue hosted the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship (March 2021), hosts home men’s and women’s basketball games, University programming, and community events. Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director of Facilities and Events, this position will be responsible for managing the AUBC and will serve as the primary point of contact for the Center; and as such, will manage all activities required to operate, maintain and service the facility and/or events held in the Atlantic Union Bank Center at James Madison University.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Serves as primary point of contact for the Center, providing oversight of venue operations, and serves as liaison between all areas including coaching staffs, external operations, and service providers.
Makes recommendations for revenue opportunities relative to entertainment/trade shows/etc.
Develop long term planning for non-athletic events (including outreach and relationship development) with on and off campus groups.
Collaborate with Event Management during the event planning process including all logistics, the implementation of event staffing plans, and collaboration with various units within Athletics, the University, and external clients.
Provide leadership/oversight for Full-time, Part-time, and student staff through recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation.
Directs, collaborates, and assists in resource management based on ongoing evaluation and assessment of departmental needs to best accomplish departmental mission.
Supervises vendors and contractors and ensures they are achieving university and departmental standards and goals.
Facilities and Operations Administration:
Schedule, organize, oversee, execute logistical operations, and setup/strike for all events (internal, external and athletic) in facility.
Manages the daily operations of AUBC to ensure safety, code compliance and cleanliness.
Oversee the process of maintenance issues from reporting through the University work order system to the repair and/or replacement of the maintenance issue.
Manages the facility budget, and tracks all work orders and equipment purchases pertaining to the budget.
Recommends capital equipment purchases, projects, and facility improvements to the Leadership Team.
Manages inventory for all A/V equipment, technology systems, and other functional equipment in collaboration with appropriate campus unit(s) to determine end of life, replacement costs, budget impacts, etc. for AUBC.
Assists with security monitoring of the facility, and coordinates access control and key distribution for the facility in cooperation with Administrative Assistant, and Assistant AD for Facilities & Events.
Event/Game Management and Scheduling:
Ensures all laws, codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, risk management, safety precautions, rules, regulations, and emergency procedures are followed.
Coordination of planning meetings with all involved personnel to plan all logistical aspects of the event, compile and distribute production sheets.
Maintains Master Calendar in cooperation with University Schedulers and ensures calendar system (EMS) is accurate and distributed.
Direct staff or coordinate resources in support of all events hosted in facility including planning, resource allocation, budgeting and financial reporting.
This position will collaborate with external clients and others within the department for projects and/or events and will be assigned other duties as needed.
Required qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management, Business Administration, or Related Field.
Three (3) – Five (5) years demonstrable experience in intercollegiate athletics event operations, venue management, or facilities management.
Previous experience working at an Arena, Civic Center, or multipurpose venue including experience with conversions.
Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience and ability to train and schedule staff to ensure maximum achievement.
Ability to work in an environment that has a moderate volume of events and often under stressful situations.
Experience managing events and projects.
Skilled in resource management, allocation and prioritization.
Budget management experience
Ability to delegate duties when necessary and work autonomously or with a committee while demonstrating excellent judgment in decision-making.
Possess effective communication skills, both written and oral.
Possess strong organizational skills including strong attention to detail.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred qualifications include:
Master’s degree in Sport Management, Business Administration, or Related Field.
