Media Relations Intern
Great Northwest Athletic Conference
POSITION DESCRIPTION The Great Northwest Athletic Conference, based in Portland, Ore., is accepting applications for a 10-month (August 2, 2021-May 20, 2022) media relations intern. This position is designed to expose the successful candidate to all aspects of conference athletics administration at the Division II level, with a primary focus on media relations and championships management. The position requires the ability to work weekends and evenings, and travel to GNAC championship events. MEDIA RELATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating conference media relations activities for assigned sports, including writing and editing press releases; producing content for championship programs; updating conference statistics; coordinating the weekly conference radio show, including booking guests and working with the host; coordinating selections for Athletes of the Week; working in a cooperative fashion with conference and non-conference SID’s in an effort to promote the GNAC; maintaining consistent and engaging presence through conference social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc.; updating the website in a timely fashion; assisting in conference record-keeping; and being proactive in generating earned media coverage. CHAMPIONSHIPS RESPONSIBILITIES In conjunction with the host SID, serve as conference assistant media director at GNAC championship events, including oversight of table staff (statistics crew, PA, scoreboard operators, etc.). Assist assistant commissioner for communications in logistical preparation for championship events, including staffing, event operations, and game management. Coordinate pre- and post-event media activities, including press releases and coverage through relevant social media platforms. Work with student-athletes, coaches, and administrators to develop ideas for championship enhancement. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will also assist with conference administrative duties, attend selected conference meetings, and be responsible for other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree required. The successful candidate must be highly organized and detail-oriented. Must be able to multi-task in a moderate- to fast-paced work environment and have the ability to manage and prioritize several ongoing projects. One to two years of related experience in a college sports information office preferred. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong writing skills (including familiarity with AP style), experience with StatCrew, and a strong familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience with InDesign and PhotoShop preferred. Experience in the use of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) preferred. Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Must be able to travel to championship events, and work nights and weekends.
