Summary: The Head Coach will coordinate all phases of a competitive NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball program. Including but not limited to coaching, recruiting, training, budget management, travel management, scheduling, rules and eligibility compliance, administrative duties, academic monitoring and program fundraising.

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of all athletics policies approved by the NJCAA, OCCAC and Owens Community College. Understand FERPA and the proper administrative line of command when referring student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels. Knowledge and background in men’s basketball.

Skills: Teach sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tactics. Condition athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agility. Conduct practices and contests safely, supervising locker rooms and buses. Demonstrates good basketball skills to the team. Well-developed oral communication skills. Effective supervisory techniques.

Abilities: Instruct team members and coaches about rules and changes in the rules and teach fundamentals of the sport. Help in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning weight programs. Ability to recruit players, schedule games, coordinate fundraisers, and market and promote the intercollegiate men’s basketball program. Must work effectively with the players and other coaches.

Other: Accountable for personal actions on and off campus properties. Arrives early enough before practices, contests and meetings to adequately prepare and remain long enough afterward to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions. Never criticizes, admonishes or argues with other coaching staff or any staff member within ears or eyes of players, parents, or fans. Carry out in a positive way the philosophy and objective of the sport. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and college property, its care and proper use.

Essential Functions:

• Recruiting, scheduling, fundraising and coaching all home and away games.
• Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the collegiate sports program.
• Supervises and conducts practices and contests safely, supervises locker rooms and buses.
• Works directly with the Athletic Director notifying him/her of potential problems/awards, etc.
• Teaches sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tactics.
