Gonzaga Athletics is looking forward to finding our next Graduate Intern for Academic Services! This internship supports the daily operations and functions of the Academic Services programs and reports directly to the Director of Academic Support Services. We are looking for hardworking, passionate, amicable individuals invested in learning and preparing for roles of Academic Coordinators or Tutorial Coordinators within collegiate athletics. The opportunity will provide the core requirements for Academic Support Services that cannot be learned in a classroom. After completing this internship, the intern will be able to apply for Academic Support Services positions across the country and will be well-prepared to deal with the complexities of a permanent position. PURPOSE: The Academic Services Intern will assist the Director of Academic Support Services with the maintenance, progress and enhancement of the Gonzaga Athletics Academic Support Services Program as it relates to academic advising and registration, Gonzaga Athletics Peer Tutorial Program, and continuing eligibility for the student-athletes of Gonzaga University. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Individual Academic Advising – 35% -Provide academic advisement, mentoring, and support for assigned freshmen and at-risk student-athletes. -Provide registration assistance to continuing Gonzaga student-athletes each semester during the registration process. -Provide assistance for academic planning and major/career exploration for student-athletes. Tutorial Program Support – 30% -Assist the Tutorial Coordinator with all facets of our Peer Tutorial program including, but not limited to: planning and attending bi-weekly tutor trainings, grading and tracking completion of assessments from trainings, updating spreadsheets and historical documentation. -Co-lead our efforts of maintaining our Level I College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification. Life Skills Programming Support – 15% -Actively participate and assist in leading various workshops for EDPE 195 New Athlete Orientation course for freshman student-athletes each fall on assigned topics. Additional responsibilities of tracking attendance, course evaluations, and guest speaker feedback also required. -Attend various Life Skills events to support all areas of student-athlete development. Other/Miscellaneous Functions – 20% -Learn and perform continuing eligibility checks during each certification period for assigned student-athletes. -Participate in our departments ongoing efforts of promoting Academic Integrity in accordance with Gonzaga University’s Academic Integrity Policy. -Assist in the registration of incoming freshmen student-athletes for courses each summer. -Assist with preparation of reports for coaches, staff, the West Coast Conference, and the NCAA. -Other duties as assigned by the Director of Academic Support Services. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This internship is a fully immersive experience replicating a full-time position in the field of Academic Support Services. In addition to regular office hours, this field often requires night and weekend hours where applicable to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. Applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree prior to the start of the internship. This is a two-year program starting June 1, 2021 – May 15, 2023 and is renewable for the second year by mutual agreement between both parties. These interviews will be a combination of phone and Zoom with various members of our staff. - The successful applicant is expected to be identified by Thursday, April 1st. - This in-person internship is anticipated to start Tuesday, June 1, 2021 (start date can have some flexibility but will need to be discussed ahead of time). REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree; highly organized with attention to detail; strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe Design Suite); ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and meet established deadlines; excellent oral and written communication skills. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with intercollegiate athletics; knowledge of NCAA rules, regulations and academic requirements; familiarity with computer database systems (including NCAA CA); Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, student development, business administration or sports management. |
Additional Salary Information: A monthly living stipend of $1,000 and graduate school tuition will be provided. The successful applicant may enroll in any graduate program offered by Gonzaga University (School of Law and doctoral programs excluded) and is subject to the entrance requirements of the university (successful applicant must be admitted into a graduate program at Gonzaga for Fall 2021). Preferred graduate programs are M.A. Organizational Leadership, M.A. Communication & Leadership, M.A. Sport & Athletic Administration and Master of Business Administration.
