Under the direction of the Director of Marketing, the United Soccer Coaches Communications Officer is responsible for the proactive and reactive public relations and communications efforts of the association. This position plays a key role in managing and enhancing United Soccer Coaches’ reputation with members, the soccer community and beyond.
Some of the Communications Officer’s overarching responsibilities include (but not limited to):
Innovative storytelling: We are all about finding new and creative ways to tell stories about the work that we do. A successful candidate will have strong writing skills and the ability to create engaging content using several media platforms including Soccer Journal, the official publication of the association.
Audience analysis: Core to successful communication is understanding and developing audiences. This role will work as part of a team to understand audiences for our services and activities, and evaluate the best channels to effectively communicate.
Social Media Execution: Social media is a key way in which United Soccer Coaches interacts with internal and external audiences. This position will work to develop a social media strategy and ensure that it is effectively executed across multiple social media channels.
Media relations: developing relationships with key media for the purposes of placing stories and promoting story idea development about the association, its mission and projects.
Program/event awareness: United Soccer Coaches coordinates a large number of education courses each year, as well as the annual Convention in January. In this role, the successful candidate will help raise awareness of these events and activities by utilizing established channels, as well as generating ideas for new engagement avenues.
The Communications Officer must thrive in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision, and quickly comprehend and act on changing priorities when necessary. This person must also demonstrate superior customer service, interpersonal and written communication skills, and proofreading skills.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related degree
3-5 years of experience in the public relations/communications field
Proven experience in writing, social media strategy/execution, media relations, and promotions
Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office and online tools such as Google Analytics.
Strong editing skills
Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and the ability to meet and perform under pressure
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to follow through on tasks with minimal supervision
Ability to work as a part of a team
Previous experience in marketing, communications or related department with a soccer or sports organization
Previous experience in email marketing
Basic HTML and CSS knowledge is a plus
Bilingual language skills (English and Spanish) desirable
Soccer background, as either a player, coach and/or fan
