Assistant Director of Academic Services for Student Athletes

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide academic advising services and academic support to student athletes from a caseload of football, and other assigned teams, on a full-time 12 month basis. Lead oversight of football academics in collaboration with two other football academic advisors. Serve as a mentor and resource to student athletes, and make appropriate referrals to services on campus such as Counseling & Psychological Services, Learning Specialist, and/or Office of Disability Services, as needed. Closely monitor at-risk student athletes and provide additional academic resources as needed. Demonstrate commitment to, and compliance with, Appalachian State University’s and the Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well as the Sun Belt conference and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations. Keep accurate records and documentation of all student contacts for accountability purposes while maintaining confidentiality. Keep current on NCAA eligibility standards in order to monitor and communicate student athlete eligibility with students and coaches. Work closely with the Eligibility Specialist to ensure accurate NCAA Eligibility Certification for all student athletes in caseload. Assist with data collection for reports such as Academic Progress Rate, Graduation Success Rate and the Annual Report. Assist football coaching staff, and coaching staff of other assigned sport(s), with providing academic information to prospective students and their parents during official and unofficial recruiting visits. Attend monthly compliance meetings with team administrators, compliance and coaching staff. Supervise two (2) Graduate Assistants (20 hours/week) for football. Coordinate academic meetings and grade reports for the football coaching staff and academic staff. Maintain positive working relationships with faculty, coaches and administrators, and serve as an advocate for student athletes across campus and in the community. Work closely with colleagues within the Student Learning Center and serve as a liaison between the Student Learning Center, Athletics Department, and faculty. Position requires some evening and weekend work. Monitors all students in the caseload who are on academic probation. All advisors are expected to stay abreast of university academic policies and procedures and the Department of Athletics policies and procedures as well. Represents Academic Services for Student Athletes (ASA) on various committees and University-related functions. Assists with special projects as deemed appropriate by the Director. Evaluation Competencies: Student-Centered Advising Skills: Advisor demonstrates skills that create a positive advising session: listening, flexibility, patience, receptivity, and responsiveness. Advisor is consistently available to meet with students via appointments and walk-ins, including students whose advisor is unavailable. Adherence to work schedule: Advisor works 40 hours each week, except on holidays, vacation and sick days. Advisor maintains a reasonably detailed calendar indicating appointments and clearly communicates with supervisor about scheduling, requesting days off, etc. Professional Contributions and Development: Advisor seeks to improve skills and effectiveness as a professional. Advisor presents and participates in meetings and conferences beyond the office and attends appropriate and relevant workshops and professional development opportunities. Continuing advisors: Attend training and professional development sessions scheduled for all academic advisors during the summer and academic year as well as the monthly sessions on advising updates and issues. Interpersonal Skills: Advisor demonstrates ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues, supervisors, students, and parents. Technological skills appropriate for performance of job duties: Uses technology in an appropriate and professional manner and stays current with advising and orientation technology (Banner: Internet Native and Faculty Self Services Portal, DegreeWorks, JumpForward, Early Registration Advising, MapWorks, Slate, OneNote etc.).
