The position is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day coaching of the softball program. The candidate will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic administration to promote Harvard Athletics’ mission of academic integration, competitive excellence, and principled leadership in division one athletics.
The main duties of the position include assisting in the instruction of student-athletes during practices, preparation of student-athletes for competition, and support of strategic decisions in games. Pitching or Catching expertise is preferred. Ability to throw front toss, hit ground balls and flyballs is necessary. Ability to pitch batting practice is helpful.
Secondary duties for this position will include assisting in the operational management of the program. Assisting with various administrative duties associated with running the program. Off campus recruiting is not permitted per NCAA rules.
General Requirements (education, years of experience, type of experience, etc.): Bachelor's degree required. Two to four years of Division I playing experience or two years coaching experience in Softball. Outstanding sport specific technical, tactical and strategic knowledge. Good understanding of Harvard and the Ivy League and the role that athletics plays within the University. Knowledge of NCAA Division I softball rules.
Technology Skills Required (desktop skills, proficiency with specific applications, etc.): Basic proficiency in excel and word. Basic internet and email capabilities. Basic video filming and editing skills required. Ability to break down, analyze and synthesize film to use in practices with student athletes.
Competencies Required (skills/behaviors): Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to relate with constituencies outside of the Dept of Athletics (Deans, Admissions, alumnae, parents) as well as Department administration and other coaches. Ability to work in accordance with the rules set forth by Harvard, the Ivy League and NCAA.
