This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Air Station, Meridian, Mississippi. The purpose of this position is to manage all facets of a Physical Fitness Center and seasonal Aquatics Center. Management functions will include the oversight of customer service and fiscal controls, facility and equipment cleanliness and maintenance of the Physical Fitness Center, as well as the planning, organization, implementation and continuous controlling of the seasonal aquatic program.
Manages a physical fitness facility that provides facilities and equipment for conditioning programs for authorized patrons as well as supervising and providing instruction as applicable and/or as assigned. Manages and performs duties associated with a fitness intake/assessment program. Instructs individuals and groups in proper implementation and maintenance of conditioning and training programs within the fitness center for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition and flexibility training. Conducts micro-fit testing which includes measuring individuals aerobic capacities, body fat percentage, recommended height/weight ratios, strength, flexibility, muscular endurance and blood pressure.
Directly supervises customer service staff, ensuring proper fiscal controls. Frequently utilizes computer programs and various documents to ensure proper staff, facility and equipment oversight. Plans, organizes, implements and controls a facility and equipment maintenance and replacement program, ensuring proper functioning of fitness equipment.
Manages the overall operation of the aquatics facility during the aquatics season including lessons, parties, special events, swim meets, Physical Readiness Test (PRT) and all related activities. Supervises all lifeguards and gate guards, responsible for training and scheduling to comply with Navy regulations and ensure safety of all patrons. Oversees the maintenance of aquatics facility and equipment ensuring proper water chemistry at all times. Coordinate with staff, Civil Engineers, Public Works and local contractors regarding pool maintenance.
Certified by Navy approved organization to conduct Lifeguard Training and other health & safety courses as required by standards and instructions.
Prepare and administer annual aquatics budget. Prepare all purchase requests related to aquatics.
Sets up individual fitness programs as a personal trainer for groups and individuals to meet their needs. Maintain presence in the fitness center during the highest usage hours and by appointments.
Manages the operation of the fitness center which includes: full service cardio, weight room, family fitness area, formal and informal fitness events.
Ensures that all fitness equipment is kept in top shape and maintains the equipment. Ensure that all equipment meets safety requirements and that the Fitness Center is kept attractive, clean and sanitary.
Ensure that the Fitness Center operations comply with all navy operating and safety policies, programs and instructions. Prepare standard operating written instructions and procedures concerning programs, operations and safe use of equipment for the safety and well-being of all personnel authorized to use the facility. Follow navy fitness standards by researching, planning for recapitalization and making recommendations for these acquisitions to meet Navy requirements and clientele needs.
Train employees in the use of Fitness equipment so they can show people how to use it or let people know when they are using it wrong.
Answer questions regarding programs offered through the Fitness Center and/or other MWR facilities/services available to the customer.
Schedules fitness and aquatics staff and exercises time card and leave authority. Makes or approves selections for subordinate non-supervisory positions. Effects minor disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands, recommending other action in more serious cases. Plans and establishes work schedules, deadlines, and standards for acceptable work. Recommends awards and bonuses for non-supervisory personnel. Finds ways to improve production or increase the quality of the work directed. Identifies developmental and training needs of employees and provides for or arranges needed development and training. Hears and resolves complaints from employees, referring group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to the Recreation Program Head. Ensure accurate completion of assignments and provides assistance when necessary. Maintains and updates employee training records when required.
Administer all safety programs related to fitness and aquatics, maintaining a safe and healthful environment for all patrons. Enforce all regulations, laws, instructions, rules and safety requirements at all times.
A college degree with emphasis in Health and Fitness or knowledge gained through experience or current personal trainer certification.
The Fitness/Aquatics Specialist should have the skill and ability to provide fitness training and programming to the customers.
Knowledge of the basic policies, goals, regulations, and procedures for the administration of fitness and aquatics programs is preferred, however related experience is acceptable.
Must be an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor.
Must have knowledge to be able to carry out the day to day operation of the Fitness Center.
Must know fitness equipment and be able to show someone how to use it.
Must be mature with an adequate level of physical fitness, sound leadership, effective written and verbal communication skills.
