Western Michigan University is accepting applications for an Athletic Media Relations Intern for the 2017-18 academic year. Located in Kalamazoo, Mich., Western Michigan is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and sponsor of 16 Division I sports. WMU is looking for candidates that will help continue to foster growth and success of Bronco Athletics, as well as enhance the Western Michigan Athletics brand. In 2016-17, WMU fielded the No. 15 ranked football team in the nation which put together an undefeated regular season and went on to win the Mid-American Conference Championship and play in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The Broncos also produced the No. 10 ranked hockey program in the country and had several other successes across various sports.Overview: Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred qualifications include a minimum of two years experience in intercollegiate media relations/sports information work, experience in desktop publishing and graphic design with Adobe InDesign and PhotoShop software, experience in writing, editing and designing effective publications, familiarity with Statcrew software, and strong communications skills. All candidates should possess an ability to meet deadlines and work nights/weekends. Responsibilities include, but are not confined to: Media Relations Interns assist in traditional sports information capacities which include writing press releases, recaps, feature stories, historical archiving and statistical up keeping for Western Michigan’s 16 Intercollegiate athletic teams. Interns will also aid in creating content for social media and with the maintenance of WMU’s athletic website, wmubroncos.com. Interns will have the opportunity to assist at major athletics functions, including (but not limited to) football, men’s and women’s basketball, hockey and volleyball game days. Interns will be exposed to the media and public relations side of the sports industry, as well as work closely with areas of marketing and video production. This is a 9-month appointment with a start date of August 14, 2017 - with the possibility of a paid summer extension. Estimated pay is $1,200 per month.
Assist in game-day management and statistics for volleyball, basketball and Olympic sports
Writing press releases and game notes; daily updating and maintenance of WMU’s athletics website
Update / provide content for social media channels
Implement publicity campaigns to increase fan engagement across all sports
Assist with the maintenance of archival information, records, photos, statistics, etc.
Work with video staff to create video web content, specialty packages & features
Report to the NCAA & Mid-American Conference
Other duties as assigned
Minimum of two year’s experience in an intercollegiate sports information office
Working knowledge of various Statcrew software packages
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign & Photoshop
Must be self-motivated with attention to detail and accuracy
A bachelor’s degree is required
Evening and weekend hours with some travel
