Student Advocacy Specialist (Learning Specialist)
The Morgan Academic Center (MAC) Learning Specialists report to the Assistant Director of Learning Services, support an assigned caseload of student-athletes (football and Olympic sports), and assist with ongoing projects as assigned to enhance the overall operation of the MAC's Learning Services (tutoring, mentoring, study hall, technology education, etc.) Responsibilities include reviewing incoming student-athlete documentation, co-facilitating assessments and workshops (Summer Bridge, Fall, and Spring/Mid-Year Admits), identifying at-risk student-athletes, creating learning profiles/recommendations, and developing individualized academic support plans. A main priority is providing instructional intervention with assigned caseload of at-risk students in areas such as goal setting, time management, note taking, reading, writing, critical thinking, and other study techniques and strategies to improve self-efficacy and learning outcomes. The Learning Specialists are also responsible for tracking student growth and development, maintaining confidential files and information in accordance with privacy laws, supporting student-athletes registered with Student Disability Resources (SDR) in understanding policies and procedures, and monitoring utilization of academic accommodations and applicable services. This role requires frequent collaboration with the Assistant Director of Learning Services, and provides information and input to MAC academic counselors and coaching staffs about student-athlete academic progress and needs. The Learning Specialists will meet with prospective student-athletes and families during the recruiting process to discuss services available at the Morgan Academic Center and Penn State University. Finally, evening and weekend hours will be required. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Must maintain strict adherence to NCAA and Big Ten Conference rules and regulations affecting the sport and the University.
