| Position Title: Recreation Coordinator (Facilities & Assessment) |
Hiring Unit: Campus Recreation
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Facilities, the Coordinator is responsible for providing direction, organization, guidance and supervision of recreation facility operations, informal recreation and assessment components of the Campus Recreation unit. This person oversees and exercises independent judgment and initiative in managing recreation facility operations as they relate. The Coordinator is also responsible for the organization, implementation and contributes strongly to the analysis of all department-wide assessment, survey and statistical initiatives. The Coordinator oversees all Building Service Workers including the Sub Foreman, two Building Service Workers and several Student Custodians. The Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the student employee incentive and discipline systems and aiding in the growth and development of all students and student staff. The Coordinator has a specific emphasis on guidance and mentoring of Campus Recreation Student Facility Supervisors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Aid the Assistant Director of Facilities and Informal Recreation in overall operational management of the indoor recreation facilities. Provide oversight to all activities that occur during assigned shift coverage to include safe and appropriate informal recreation, fitness, sport and program activities. Act in place of the Assistant Director during his or her absence. Remain current and fluent with best practices and industry standards from NIRSA, The American College of Sports Medicine and/or other fitness, recreation and sport organizational authorities.
Oversee all in-house custodial services and staff to include day-to-day and all special event facility setup and teardown responsibilities resulting from internal and external events in the Student Fitness Center and Activity Center. Supervise Building Service Worker Sub-Forman, two Building Service Workers and several Student Custodians. Plan facility maintenance projects to include repairs, major yearly projects and work order submission. Coordinate minor maintenance and repair of user lockers in the common areas of the facility.
Collaborate with the Campus Recreation Facility Operations Team to determine the level of event support needed and assign, delegate and instruct others on the responsibilities involved, including being the liaison to coordinate any needs from other providers such as SIUE Facilities Management to facilitate ongoing operations and/or the execution of any event as needed.
Lead the department’s overall assessment efforts to include participation in division wide assessment tools and independent surveys. Ensure that accurate information of facility use and program services is communicated in an efficient and effective manner to applicable staff. Analyze assessment instruments, modify as needed and report observable trends or indications. Distribute instruments in a manner to produce best results. Collect and analyze data. Present findings and information to appropriate personnel.
Collaborate with the Assistant Director and contribute to the overall administration of the Student Fitness Center and Informal Recreation including specific responsibilities for custodial equipment and supplies in addition to assisting with budget, policies, overall equipment inventory and other related areas.
Exercise independent judgment, initiative and problem solving skills to initiate appropriate action to resolve all user issues, both complex and routine, related to the use and operation of the facilities and services provided by Campus Recreation during assigned shifts. Enforce policies and procedures and initiate correspondence and or conduct occasional meetings with significant policy violators with support and coordination from the Dean of Students, as applicable.
Responsible for ongoing management the student personnel incentive/discipline system, including the student employee of the month program.
Knowledge and Skills
The Coordinator must have a complete understanding of the Student Affairs philosophy as it relates to the provision of recreation, sport and leisure services to a University community. The Coordinator is expected to have knowledge and understanding of survey and assessment techniques in addition to facilities management/custodial services methods, equipment and inventory management. The Coordinator must also possess strong oral and written communication skills, and strong management/supervisory skills.
The Coordinator plays a critical role in the total administration of the comprehensive and diversified programs and activities sponsored and supported by Campus Recreation. These programs and activities have a direct impact on students, faculty, staff, alumni, their families and community members. The Coordinator has full responsibility for recreation, fitness, sport and the facilities operational oversight during assigned shifts including, evenings and weekends. The Coordinator and his/her team of Building Service Workers also have direct responsibility for the physical appearance and cleanliness of the facilities as well as event set ups and breakdowns scheduled by the department and various other internal/external sources. The Coordinator also leads our departmental assessment efforts and administers annual evaluation tools collaborating through the Student Affairs Division and Information Technology Services in the administration of these assessment tools.

Fall/Spring: Tuesday – Thursday 1PM-9:30PM, Friday 11AM-7:30PM, Saturday 8:30AM-3PM
Summer & Semester Breaks (if employee prefers): Monday – Thursday 1PM-9:30PM, Friday 11AM-7:30PM
