The Wake Forest Athletic Development Internship is a three-phase program that provides an outstanding opportunity to learn fundamental development operations from a talented fundraising team led by the 2015 NAADD Fundraiser of the Year, Barry Faircloth. Our highly successful staff has led the ACC in capital fundraising for the last two years.
The Communications intern position will gain experience with writing, proofreading and designing in a variety of mediums including but not limited to Gold Rush magazine, social media, news releases, donor proposals, website content management, and event communications.
Preferred skills include: experience with social media platforms and best practices as well as with content creation and management; website content management a plus; basic design skills using InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator; excellent written communication skills; and proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint.
In addition to communications-specific experience, participant will have access to learning every aspect of how a development office operates in a Power 5 conference school and will leave the program fully prepared for the next step in their career.
We are now accepting applications from candidates interested in completing all phases of the program, starting August 1, 2017. This is an unpaid internship.
Fall Phase August 1 – December 22
Learn about game day development responsibilities, premium seating set up and hospitality. Learn Blackbaud, Paciolan, Advizor and other software systems to manage development operations. Learn about the activation of social functions including Homecoming and Deacon Club Appreciation events. Participate in the student-athlete Thank-a-Thon. Learn strategic communications related to fundraising initiatives.
Spring Phase Jan 2 – May 30
Learn how to set up a successful reunion weekend and observe high-end stewardship events. Learn to develop strategic long-term plans for prospects and the actions and best practices for reaching fundraiser targets and goals. Observe programs and events designed to support our capital campaign.
Summer Phase June 1 – July 31
At the Development Staff Retreat, our interns will participate in role play for development calls and learn the responsibilities of each development position. Learn to evaluate challenges and opportunities in the fundraising environment. Learn about our year-end fundraising push, securing new donors, annual fund renewals, solicitations and other external communications.
Learning will take place with various staff members including the Operations Director of Development, the Director of Strategic Communications, and other senior leadership. At the conclusion of each phase, interns will document their learning experience and review the opportunity to continue to the next phase.
