The contract position of national coordinator of officials is the NCAA’s ongoing commitment to improving the overall quality and consistency of officiating throughout collegiate volleyball. The NCAA volleyball officiating program (VOP) helps promote better communication between officials, conferences, coaches and the NCAA, and helps provide consistency in the interpretation of NCAA volleyball rules and officiating mechanics. Additionally, the national coordinator assists the NCAA volleyball committees in the identification, training, selection and evaluation of officials for the NCAA volleyball championships.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Positively represent the interests of the NCAA and its volleyball officiating program by fostering a culture of excellence and cooperation among all relevant constituencies.
b. Assist the NCAA staff in continuing to improve the national officiating program, national educational platforms and the regional advisors program.
c. Administer the selection, assignment, notification and advancement of Division I NCAA championship officials with approval of the volleyball committee.
d. Assist the Divisions II and III women’s volleyball committees with the selection, assignment and notification of officials during the respective championships, as well as other championship officiating matters (e.g., identification and confirmation of replacement officials, identification and confirmation of a supervisor of officials for the finals site, etc.).
e. Work regularly with Divisions I, II and III conference coordinators of officials and PAVO to ensure the most consistent and effective teaching and communication is being utilized in educating and developing officials.
f. Work collaboratively with the NCAA volleyball secretary-rules editor (VSRE) and NCAA playing rules staff to ensure good communication as rules, interpretations and mechanics of the game are reviewed.
g. Create content for, coordinate and oversee VOP officiating clinics (in person or via video) for all officials in conjunction with the NCAA VSRE.
h. Produce and edit instructional videos with approval from the NCAA staff, to be used by officials/coordinators and coaches, outlining new rules, points of emphasis, mechanics (officials/coordinators only) and any other information deemed necessary and appropriate.
i. Conduct presentations with the NCAA VSRE for the Divisions I, II and III conference coordinators of officials, outlining the new rules, points of emphasis, mechanics and other officiating matters as part of the annual coordinators of officials meeting.
j. Work collaboratively with the NCAA VSRE and PAVO to develop the annual eligibility exam and in-season quizzes for posting on the NCAA ArbiterSports VOP website.
k. Evaluate performance of officials during the regular season via television or DVD’s.
l. Conduct in-person evaluations of officials and schedule travel during the year to successfully engage in dialogue with the members of the volleyball community.
m. Develop educational and video content for posting on the NCAA ArbiterSports VOP website throughout the year with approval from NCAA staff.
n. Oversee the regional advisory program, which includes conducting regularly scheduled teleconferences, communication through the NCAA ArbiterSports VOP website and in-person meetings with the group.
o. Serve as primary mechanics liaison.
p. Conduct joint teleconferences with the NCAA VSRE and selected media partners to outline rules changes, points of emphasis and other officiating matters as requested and approved by the NCAA staff.
q. Conduct in-season teleconferences with the conference coordinators of officials and Division I staff, including the NCAA VSRE and NCAA playing rules administrator assigned to volleyball.
r. Participate in teleconferences and in-person meetings as an ex-officio member of the NCAA volleyball rules committee.
s. Conduct teleconference with official evaluators selected to work the Division I championship in conjunction with the NCAA Division I staff.
t. Conduct presentations for the American Volleyball Coaches Association membership on various officiating matters as requested and approved by the NCAA staff.
u. Attend in-person committee meetings or participate in committee teleconferences throughout the year, as requested (e.g., NCAA Divisions I, II and III volleyball committee meetings, volleyball rules committee meetings).
v. Develop mechanics questions for the annual rules survey to be submitted to the NCAA playing rules administrator.
w. Perform other services as requested by NCAA staff and/or the NCAA volleyball committees.
