Cornell University welcomes applications for the position of Head Coach of nationally competitive men and women’s intercollegiate polo teams. Primary responsibilities include coaching teams, managing and providing daily animal care, and assisting with day-to-day facility operations.
This position will coach approximately 35 student athletes. Prepare team for practice and competitions in accordance with Ivy League, NCAA, and University policies. Prepare, administer and monitor team budget, animal care records and other documents and related gift accounts on a regular basis. Direct athlete training and skills development in team practices/workouts and individual skill sessions. Organize and execute team practice and conditioning sessions. Work in cooperation with the trainers and other staff (strength & conditioning coach, equipment, sports information, facilities) assigned to the team. Participate with supervision in preparing a nationally competitive schedule, work with the travel coordinator to plan away trips and supervise the activities of volunteer assistant coaches. Communicate with alumni and friends of the program
Managing and Providing Daily Animal Care:
The head coach will manage and perform all aspects of caring for approximately 35 horses, not limited to farrier, chiropractor and veterinarian services, daily feeding, turning out the horses, visual health inspection, and clean up. Maintain accurate records of vaccinations, coggins, de-worming and medical and health records. Schedule horse care duties as they pertain to team members and paid staff. Co-manage with the Oxley Barn Manager with management of the herd, catering to individual horse needs.
Day-to-Day Facility Operations Assistance:
This position will also assist with day-to-day maintenance of the Oxley Equestrian Center including dragging the rings for the multiple types of users. Must be available during breaks and intercessions for horse care duties and supervise volunteers.
Bachelor’s degree; 3 years of experience or equivalent.
Prior successful coaching experience with a peer-level or high caliber team.
Must be able to work cooperatively and productively with other coaches, barn managers, and facility users.
Candidates must be detail-oriented
Candidates must have a clean driving record, and the ability to drive a truck and horse trailer and pursue securing a CDL License.
