The Southland Conference, located in suburban north Dallas, and serving 13 member institutions in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, is seeking applications for TWO full-time Assistant Communications Director positions. The selected applicants, under the direction of the Associate Commissioner for Strategic Communications, shall assist in the overall management of the Conference’s communications operation, focused primarily on the compilation and dissemination of statistical and other pertinent information. This includes, but is not limited to: 1. Assisting in the development of a visionary, creative and effective communications strategy across multiple platforms; 2. Developing productive working relationships with national, regional and local media members that enhances coverage of the Conference. Actively telling the Conference’s story, identifying and creating opportunities to obtain media coverage for the Conference and its membership; 3. Compiling and distributing Conference statistics and maintaining historical records for the league’s 19 sports; 4. Being knowledgeable in traditional and non-traditional media relations and statistical services, as well as publicity and promotional methods that enhance the reputation of the Conference and its member institutions; 5. Expertly writing, editing and managing Conference content, including for the official web site, www.southland.org, as well as for news releases, media guides and other printed material, electronic communications, television and radio copy, and social media sites; 6. Managing and disseminating players of the week selections, all-Conference teams, postseason honors, and other Conference awards initiatives; 7. Directing and assisting with other events such as sport media days and post-event media conferences; 8. Traveling to and staffing select Conference championship events and other special events when necessary; 9. Working collaboratively with and providing appropriate direction and assistance to institutional athletics personnel for the collective good of the Conference’s publicity efforts; 10. And, performing other duties as assigned by the Commissioner and Associate Commissioner for Strategic Communications.
Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of two to four years of experience in sports information/communications at a Division I institution, conference office or professional sports organization is preferred. Knowledge of the communications industry, current and emerging technologies related to sports communications/media services and excellent written and oral communication skills is required. Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Office, InDesign and Photoshop, and have experience working with StatCrew software and social media platforms.
