Under the direction of the Assistant Athletics Director of Development, assume overall management of and responsibility for creating and executing comprehensive annual giving strategy on behalf of UC Davis Athletics.
Specifically, this position will be responsible for a program to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward individual prospects capable of making annual gifts up to $50,000 and for personally managing a pool of qualified prospects and annual donors that make significant annual contributions and may make major gifts (which may exceed $50,000) for Athletics Department's priorities. This position will solicit gifts primarily through phone calls and personal visits with alumni, parents and friends of UC Davis throughout Northern California with special emphasis on local regions with high concentrations of potential supporters.
In coordination with UC Davis Athletics leadership, other Athletics development personnel, and individual sport coaches, this position will create strategy to drive philanthropic revenue to support the Athletics General Fund (Team Aggie), Aggie Pride Club (football), sport-specific funds, and special projects. Prepare oral and written presentations to potential donors and coordinate approaches consistent with department and university priorities and in line with UC Davis and NCAA policies.
This position will also serve as primary liaison to UC Davis' Central Annual Giving office to develop an appropriate solicitation schedule, content, and key messaging points. When appropriate, this position will also work with volunteers who support athletics initiatives, including attending meetings and conducting peer screening sessions.
This position will creatively manage Athletics Development online assets in conjunction with other department assets in a consistent and progressive manner. This includes TeamAggie.com and social media accounts, and shall be managed in a way that accurately and effectively communicates with alumni and donor base.
The Director of Development for Annual Giving is expected to raise identified gift dollar amounts as established in annual development officer performance metrics goal setting. In addition, this position will serve as a direct contact for a small number of sports, specifically, supporting their general development efforts.
Fulfills other development responsibilities as they relate to the overall Athletics Development Office. Ensure that program activities are in compliance with University of California and UC Davis development and gift policies and guidelines for Regents and Foundation funds.
Thorough written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationship at all organizational levels and with high-level business and community leaders, as well as deans, faculty, development colleagues, top volunteers, and campus leadership. Highly skilled collaboration and negotiation skills.
Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices, including prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and donor stewardship.
Skills to attain a thorough working knowledge of the department and campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
Analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
Project management skills, including ability to meet deadlines and plan and execute events.
Organizational and time management skills to independently manage multiple fund raising activities and initiatives.
Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
Skilled at articulating a compelling case for the support of UC Davis Athletics based on understanding of the mission and culture of a major research university.
Active listening skills, including analytical and critical thinking skills, and skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
Professional ethics and discretion; skills to maintain confidentiality and to use sound judgment; high level of initiative, creativity and energy.
Skill to analyze data from a wide variety of sources and present statistical information in an understandable, appropriate format. Analytical skills to anticipate/identify issues; compare data to multi-source sets of information to draw conclusions, develop goals/plans for resolution and implementation.
Successful fund raising experience within a complex, major research university setting.
Experience and demonstrated success in leadership annual giving fundraising ($10,000 and up).
Experience developing strategic relationships with individuals and researching, building and managing a portfolio of donors and prospects with a goal of raising philanthropic support. Experience using a variety of gift vehicles including gifts of securities, in-kind gifts, and other assets and aspects of planned giving.
Experience using centralized prospect coordination and tracking systems and centralized alumni and donor databases.
Experience developing written proposals and successfully soliciting gift support from individuals.
Experience managing a special gifts program to ensure a high level of effectiveness in raising private gift support for UC Davis.
