The Head Coach will be responsible for all administrative and coaching aspects of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs and must be well versed in both distance training and multiple other specialties (sprints and jumps for example). The head coach will provide instruction, training, coaching and administer all organizational aspects of these intercollegiate programs via coordinated recruitment, organization, training, supervision and collaboration with part-time assistant specialty coaches. See detailed responsibilities below. Men’s and women’s cross country has a long history at UMF, whereas outdoor track and field was established more recently. Indoor track and field remains a club sport at this time. This is a 10-month professional position -- August 15 - June 15, annually. Working conditions include detailed office work, work in gymnasium/field house, pool, weight rooms as well as outdoors all-seasons/variable weather conditions of New England as well as hours which include both weekday business hours and evening/weekend hours and travel with occasional overnights. The position reports to the Director of Athletics, Fitness & Recreation and supervises assistant coaches, student workers, and possibly assist in weight room supervision. Essential Duties include: • Recruit, develop/train, inspire, graduate, talented student-athletes for cross country and track and field programs. • Plan, schedule and conduct excellent practices/training activities, with appropriate seasonal progressions resulting in injury prevention and maximized performance enhancement • Conduct all applicable administrative, coaching responsibilities for races/meets from scheduling, to budget management, to strategic entries, as well as travel logistics. • Comply with all applicable laws/policies, NCAA Division III, UMF/UMaine System in particular. • Manage funds/inventory. • Recruit, train/develop, schedule/coordinate and supervise part-time seasonal asst. coaches • Excellent and timely communication with all appropriate internal and external stakeholders/constituents Primary Responsibilities also include: • Directing all aspects of coaching and management of our NCAA Division III men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs • Recruiting, retaining and graduating talented and academically qualified and motivated student-athletes to field broad based and competitive programs • Leading and managing participants resulting in commitment, pride and competitiveness • Coaching in practice/training and competition (instructing effective techniques/mechanics and developing & implementing appropriate aspirational individual and team goals/strategies) • Providing individual/team strength and conditioning programming/activities, collaboratively with other campus strength and conditioning/sports medicine staff to prevent/minimize/rehabilitate injuries and maximize safe competitive performance • Supporting academic & personal development of all student-athletes • Recruiting/hiring (as authorized) and supervising a part-time assistant coaches • Managing the team’s operating budget, fundraising, alumni gift funds as authorized • Proposing appropriate budgets/schedules that operate within funding constraints. • Coordination of all aspects of hosting any home invitational races/meets/events. • Managing the purchase, proper care, use, storage of program inventory of equipment and team gear. • Engaging team members in selected/meaningful community service activities. • Developing/maintain strong program alumni relations (data base, communications, events) • Initiate and effectively engage in appropriate/pre-authorized fundraising activities. • Engage in on-going professional development to stay current with applicable coaching/training best practices • Ability to assist/collaborate with strength & conditioning/performance enhancement beyond own programs (with proper certifications) is desired. May contribute to supervision of weight room beyond own teams. • Effectively utilize programs/software for business/recruiting and other tasks/operations • Other duties as assigned are possible (teaching, event management, other) • Contributing member of the athletics department operations, goals and/or initiatives • Visible, fully integrated member of the overall University community UMF reserves the right to change or assign additional duties as necessary. • Appropriate training techniques for Cross Country and most if not all track and field disciplines • Three years of applicable coaching experience in both cross country and track and field • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Passion and ability to successfully recruit, retain and graduation talented and qualified student-athletes to field competitive Division III intercollegiate teams • Unwavering high standard of ethics and integrity in all areas, but especially with regard to student-athlete welfare and development and compliance with all applicable laws, university and organizational (NCAA DIII, Conference policies) • Stamina/drive necessary to work extended periods of long and variable hours, including evenings/weekends, for practice/team travel. • Desire and ability to work well with and contribute to department members and others on campus. • Bachelor’s degree • A minimum of three years coaching experience required; prefer collegiate level, head coach of both cross country and track and field. Competitive collegiate participation experience is also desirable. • Demonstrated ability to succeed in recruitment of qualified & talented prospective student-athletes. • Demonstrated ability to inspire student-athletes to develop to their fullest potential • Strong commitment to the holistic development of the student-athlete • Highest level of personal integrity, ethical personal and professional conduct • Outstanding work ethic, stamina and professional judgment • Demonstrated coaching success, effective ability to teach through sport and about sport/coaching • Knowledge of & commitment to the letter and spirit of NCAA Division III rules & regulations as well as department, UMF, UMaine System, applicable conference policies • Outstanding skills in oral and written communication • A team player with versatile skills required for various departmental needs • Good organizational ability and computer/technical competency • Commitment to the mission of the University of Maine Farmington • Must maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid
• Highly desirable to maintain a valid driver's license, successfully pass driving record check and be confident and comfortable driving a passenger van as needed • Head Collegiate Coaching Experience in Cross Country and Track and Field • Demonstrated experience successfully recruiting to grow competitive teams • Demonstrated ability to learn and successfully utilize existing/new software/technologies to report expenses (Concur), recruiting (Front Rush), roster entry (Direct Athletics/TRFFS). • Master’s degree, especially in a related field such as physical education/exercise science/coaching/sport leadership • Nationally/Internationally Accredited Certification in Track and Field Coaching and/or Strength and Conditioning • Clean driving record/ability to drive a 12 passenger van/rent vehicles when needed.
