Job Summary: The Academic Counselor will provide academic assistance to student-athletes in specific Olympic Sports. The position will monitor academic performance of assigned students through reoccurring meetings, study hall attendance, use of tutors, and progress reports from faculty. The academic counselor interacts and consults with college academic advisors, faculty, and college administrators regarding student-athletes’ course scheduling and other appropriate academic issues/concerns. As a member of the Student-Athlete Academic Service (SAAS) team this position is housed within the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center(A-LEC), a division of the Office of the Provost and will not work with Football or Basketball in any capacity.

This position will begin no later than June 11, 2018.

Essential Functions: Meet regularly with student-athletes to discuss academic performance and life/academic skills development. Maintain campus resource list for referrals to assist assigned student-athletes. Meetings with student-athletes may be scheduled or drop-in.

Routine reporting to coaches and other designated personnel including team meetings, athletic department meetings, compliance meetings, and any training sessions. Consult with coaches on study hall and tutor appointment assignments. Attend competitions when possible Regular preparation of academic reports. Includes regular communication with coaches to identify potential academic concerns in order to effectively intervene. Academic information gathering includes faculty communication.

Coordinate and participate in programs for student-athletes which include, but are not limited to Recruiting, Orientation, Workshops, Graduation etc. Programs include collaboration with other departments on campus – Multi Cultural Center, University Advising, Career Center, etc.

Participate in other programing conducted by the A-LEC. This includes summer orientation programs, admission events, and other university-wide activities. Serve as a representative for the A-LEC on university committees when assigned.

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree is required; preferably in Higher Education Administration, Intercollegiate Athletic Administration, or Sports Management

A minimum of two years working with student athletes at the collegiate level (will include consideration of internships) is required.

Experience working with coaches and faculty in a post secondary institution is required.

Academic advising/counseling student athletes at the Division 1 level is preferred.

Experience working with sports other than football and basketball is desired.

Experience conducting orientations and summer bridge programming is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules is essential.

Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills due to heavy interactions with students, families, faculty, coaches, and other university staff.

Candidate must also possess strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve inconsistencies with respect to SMU, AAC, and NCAA definitions of satisfactory progress on all SMU undergraduate degree programs.

Candidate must possess strong project management and organizational skills to work effectively on several projects simultaneously.

Candidate must also possess the ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as in an independent role with minimal supervision.

A strong working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel) is essential.

Knowledge of student retention and tracking software (e.g. GradesFirst, Canvas, Blackboard, PeopleSoft and/or TeamWorks) is desired.

Occasional travel with teams to proctor exams or provide other academic assistance as needed.

Some evening and weekend work to support orientation sessions or provide other academic assistance for students.
