Sports Medicine, Sports Medicine - Athletic Training
Assists the head athletic trainer with the care of student athletes. The primary objective is to help provide the safest possible sports experience for our athletes by preventing as many injuries as possible, and properly managing the injuries that do occur. By promoting the health of the athlete, it enhances their sports experience as well as the overall success of the athletic program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides athletic training services for the College’s athletic department, including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competition as necessary.
Coordinates and schedules medical referrals for student athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete safely.
Assists student wellness center with physical examinations and health screenings of student athletes.
Works cooperatively with the Student Wellness Center and the team physician to assure good communication and continuity of care.
Evaluates and recommends new techniques and equipment that would enhance the benefit of the sports medicine program.
Evaluates acute and chronic injuries.
Provides first aid and initial care of sports injuries.
Makes recommendations for immediate care, and level of continued participation; coordinates and facilitates appropriate medical referrals as necessary.
Prescribes and administers therapeutic modalities for the treatment of injuries to promote healing and minimize the length of disability.
Prescribes and supervises rehabilitation exercises to assure total recovery from sports injuries.
Applies bandaging and padding for the prevention and protection of injuries.
Supervises athletic practices and games to assure that all safety guidelines are followed and the playing environment is free of unnecessary hazards.
Assures accurate and complete records are kept of all significant injuries, medical conditions and medical histories.
Teaches CPR class for coaches, student training room assistants, and athletic training staff.
Coordinates athletic injury insurance claims between athletes, parents, Student Wealth center, and insurance companies.
Provides basic information and initial counseling for athletes with nutrition concerns.
Assists with the orientation and training of student training room assistants who will aid in the care of the athletes.
Schedules student training room assistants for training room, practice, and game coverage.
Evaluates and provides first aid and initial management for non-athletes through the Student Wellness Center.
Attends educational symposiums and meetings to assure professional development and fulfill continuing education requirements
Other duties as assigned by the head athletic trainer or athletic director.
