Associate Athletic Director, Student Services and Sports Administration The University of Delaware Newark, Delaware
The Associate Athletic Director-Student Services & Sport Administration at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services (DIARS), upholding and embracing the departmental mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.”
Under the limited direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Services & Sport Administration, position will be responsible for collaborating with department leadership on all facets of sports administration for UD Athletics’ 21 varsity athletics programs, and the successful leadership of the student-athlete development areas
The incumbent will lead the creation, execution and metrics of success for each varsity program’s vision planning, strategy and ongoing assessment efforts, in collaboration with each Head Coach. This includes but is not limited to: supervision and evaluation of coaches, setting vision, goals and strategy for each program, monitoring budget and NCAA compliance, and working with the head coach to create and manage an environment conducive to both academic and competitive success and a positive student athlete experience. As well, incumbent will lead student-athlete development planning, collaborating with Athletics, Academics, and Student Life team members on the planning, implementation and assessment efforts in student-athlete communications, events, service, leadership, careers, and other tools and resources that enhance the Blue Hen student-athlete experience.
The Associate Athletic Director is responsible for fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout all levels of the organization, including but not limited to, staffing, recruitment, team culture, and communications.
Interactions are extensive, both within and outside the department, including Senior University Administration (e.g., President, Provost, EVP, VP & General Counsel, etc.), Board of Trustees, University offices of the Registrar, Student Financial Services and Admissions, Student Life, all members of Athletics and Recreation Services, institutional representatives from CAA and/or visiting institutions, outside group representatives, parents, alumni, fans and general public.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Team Leadership (10%)
Manages the Student Services and Leadership team. Provides leadership, sets and evaluates individual goals, develops and sustains appropriate training, and monitors primary focus area of team members, as well as assessment and evaluation of processes and leadership within team.
Summarizes and reports on all team responsibilities and activities.
Drives a culture of analytics to pursue continuous improvement in all responsible areas.
Helps Senior Associate AD to develop and manage sports team budgets.
Proactively builds and maintains positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues across campus to enhance the Athletic Department brand and the University of Delaware mission.
Proactively maintains knowledge of current trends in the areas of responsibility:
Participating in peer networking opportunities
Participating in professional education opportunities
Monitoring trade publications and websites
Student Services & Leadership (40%)
Leads the Student Services and Leadership team in Athletics.
Oversees and manages the budget for Student Services and Leadership.
Working in collaboration with Student Life and Academic partners, develops, implements and evaluates all programming specific to the 4-year student-athlete experience, including academics and personal success, community engagement, health and wellness, diversity and inclusion, career preparation, as well as leadership development.
Working in collaboration with Student Life and the Associate Director of Recreation Services, develops, implements and evaluates appropriate programs for students participating in recreational sports.
Responsible for developing, coordinating, and evaluating all community service and other engagement opportunities for student-athletes and students participating in recreational sports.
Responsible for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, working with leadership to develop an effective experience for the student-athletes.
Responsible for creation of a student-athlete handbook.
Leads communication strategy to varsity student-athletes.
Work in partnership with Coaches, Leadership team members and University Partners in the effective implementation of freshman orientation, freshman seminar, and other related curriculum, including mentorship opportunities.
Sport Administration (50%)
Primary sports administrator for various programs, except those with AD oversight (currently, Football, Men’s Basketball) and/or Senior Associate AD oversight.
In partnership with the Senior Associate Athletic Director and Athletic Director, works with head coaches on program strategy and metrics of success, including supervision and evaluation of coaches, identification of professional development opportunities, monitoring budget and NCAA compliance, and working with the head coaches to create and manage an environment conducive to both academic and competitive success, and a positive student-athlete experience.
Partners with Head Coaches to review, build strategy around, and approve: Competition and practice schedules, team travel, roster management and scholarship budget, operational budget decisions, and student-athlete experience factors.
Partners with Talent Management team on salary and retention strategy review for coaches.
Facilitates Student-Athlete surveys, Exit Interviews, data collection, and assessment.
Leads coaching searches and onboarding of new hires.
Co-leads Coaches’ and Operations Team meetings.
Regular attendance at home events, and some travel to away competitions, including all post-season competition/championships.
Collaborates with Team Operations staff on team travel, training schedules, and other logistics planning.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree, in sports management, athletics administration, or related field and at least five years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience working in NCAA Division I Athletics preferred.
Experience as a student-athlete and/or coach preferred.
Knowledge of rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics as well as knowledge of overall student-athlete experience.
Understanding and philosophy around winning AND positive student-athlete experiences.
Ability to lead coaches as a Sport Administrator, including sound judgment and leadership qualities that involve a high-level of confidentiality and discretion.
Ability to lead student-athlete programming efforts, including all components of new student success curriculum (personal and academic success, health and wellbeing, mental health, career preparation, leadership, community engagement, and diversity and inclusion).
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to work collaboratively and comprehensively on the development and implementation of policies and practices.
Administrative strengths, including ability to develop a plan, execute and measure success of projects and events.
Ability to think analytically and strategically, with experience evaluating programs/projects, budgets, staff, and coaches.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Experience and expertise in solution-oriented thinking, critical thinking, conflict resolution.
