The Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting and supporting the Head Coach in conducting the individual activities of the specific sports program and fulfilling other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and/or the Director of Athletics.
Specific Job Expectations: Responsible for being thoroughly familiar with and complying with all Athletic Department, NCAA, PSAC, and sport specific governing policies.
•Responsible for passing the NCAA coaches certification exam during May of the previous year.
•Responsible for assisting in the execution and completion of the necessary forms and other related administrative work involved in the sport.
•Responsible for providing instruction and training necessary to create skills, techniques, and physical conditioning sufficient to enable each student-athlete to compete safely and competently as assigned.
•Responsible for assisting in the overall operating and planning of practice and game competition.
•Responsible for providing on-site supervision during all practices, scrimmages, games, and events related to the program as assigned.
•Responsible for treating the academic achievement and requirements necessary for progress toward a degree as a matter of the highest priority for the student-athlete.
•Responsible for assisting the Equipment Manager, Sports with Information Director and other department personnel as assigned.
•Responsible for assisting in scouting opponents and effectively recruiting qualified student-athletes to attend East Stroudsburg University in accordance with NCAA, PSAC, and University policies as assigned.
•Responsible for utilizing the athletic department recruiting form for recruiting documentation.
•Responsible for demonstrating a commitment to recruiting student-athletes of diverse backgrounds.
•Responsible for attending and participating in all staff meetings planned by the Head Coach and athletic department staff meetings, award banquets, and other athletic department sponsored activities as required.
•Responsible for representing the University on the highest professional level with appropriate dress, sportsmanship, etiquette, dignity, integrity, the strength of character while exhibiting ethical behavior.
•Responsible for earning and sustaining the good will of the various publics, such as community, student body, faculty/staff, parents, alumni and media.
•Responsible for participating with Head Coach in a variety of team Community Service projects as required.
•Responsible for treating opposing coaches, officials, students, and colleagues with respect and dignity.
•Responsible for assisting Head Coach with fostering positive growth and development for student-athletes while encouraging them to have fun in their sport.
•Responsible for abiding by policies and procedures for all aspects of athletic finances.
•Responsible for utilizing official athletic department designee for communication between institutional offices (e.g. admissions, financial aid, residence life, etc).
•Responsible for abiding by the Code of Conduct for Coaches found in the Policy and Procedures Manual.
•Responsible for self-reporting violations to the Director of Athletics and Compliance Officer when the coach has actual knowledge of a violation.
•Responsible for exhibiting a sense of loyalty to the Head Coach and the ESU athletic program.
•In the absence of the Head Coach, responsible for assuming the responsibilities of the Head Coach.
Skill Factors Education, Experience, Training:
A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
A thorough knowledge of and commitment to compliance with the rules, regulations, and policies of NCAA, PSAC, and other applicable affiliations are required.
Successful experience in coaching the specific sport as an assistant coach on the collegiate level is preferred or an equivalent combination and training that may include successful professional, high school or club coaching experience.
